Founded in 1974, the WILD Foundation is the only international organisation dedicated entirely to wilderness protection around the world. WILD works to protect the planet's wild places and the wildlife and people who depend upon them, because wilderness areas provide essential social, spiritual, biological and economic benefits. We believe that wilderness areas are an essential core element of a healthy society. Working with partners around the globe, WILD initiates and empowers positive change for wilderness, wildlife and people through four main program areas. Using Communications and Mediawe stimulate informed and inspired public action. Through Wilderness Policy and Management we promote effective wildlands legislation. To field test our ideas and solutions on the ground, our Local Action field projects train individuals, incubate and assist organizations and provide urgently needed conservation supplies. At the center of our work is the World Wilderness Congress (WWC) - the world's longest running, public environmental forum. Each WWC generates innovative ideas, initiates projects that create a real difference in communities around the world, inspires professionals and volunteers alike and sounds a call-to-action for governments and corporations. By convening world leaders, top environmentalists, leading academics, native peoples, artists, faith leaders and people from every profession and walk of life, the WWC achieves practical conservation results for wilderness and people world-wide. Mozambique proclaimed the million-hectare Limpopo National Park in November 2001 and requested Peace Parks Foundation's assistance in overseeing its development as a SADC-approved project. Significant progress has been made in turning the area into a tourist-friendly park, notably through animal translocations, infrastructure development, the construction of tourism facilities and the opening of the Giriyondo Access Facility to Kruger National Park.
Limpopo National Park now offers a number of tourism ventures. The first facilities were opened in September 2005 and include the Machampane tented camp, Machampane wilderness trail, Shingwedzi 4×4 eco-trail, Aguia Pesqueira campsite, Massingir hiking trail and Campismo Albufeira. Environmental Assurance (Pty) Ltd and its formal media partner, Mail & Guardian as well as its endorsement partner, Peace Parks Foundation were again proud to host a two day Environmental Conference from 11 - 12 November 2009 at the Gallagher Estate, in the Gauteng Province.
The theme of the conference was Presenting Environmental Problems, Solutions and Opportunities. The conference's aims were to provide delegates not only with a great opportunity to network and share experiences, but also to learn from leading local and international individuals and organizations in the environmental arena.
